Malaysian footballers pick their favourites

May the best team win: Staff of Souled Out in Sri Hartamas show their support for their favourite teams.

PETALING JAYA - Malaysia and Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) footballer S. Subramaniam is predicting an Argentina win as he feels this is the best time for Lionel Messi to stamp himself as one of the all-time legends of world football.

"Two of my club teammates (Luciano Figueroa and Jorge Pereyra Diaz) are from Argentina and I'm sure they will be happy if Argentina hoists the trophy on Brazilian soil.

"Throughout this tournament, the side led by Alejandro Sabella have proved they are very good in slowing down the tempo of opponents and closing them down," he said adding that if Angel Di Maria returned for the final, it will be a big boost for the Los Albicelestes.

The 29-year-old centre-back said that Germans will go in as favourites after their 7-1 demolition of Brazil.

"Germans are a good counter-attacking side and they keep the ball well. Thomas Mueller is a threat and I admire his athleticism.

"They are favourites but my pick will be Argentina. The game will end in 90 minutes," said the player popularly known as Subra.

His national teammate Amiridzwan Taj Tajudin who is rooting for Germany said after losing out in the semi-finals of the last two tournaments, this will be the time for the Germans to win their fourth World Cup.

"I've been supporting Germany for a very long time. In this tournament, they have looked unstoppable," said the 28-year-old centre-back.

Former Malaysian footballer James Wong said that he did not support any teams in particular but preferred South American teams.

"I prefer their flair of football. It does not matter whether or not they are the underdogs," he said.
