Man hand-delivers pizza to Pope Francis on the road

Pizzeria owner Enzo Cacialli sat up and took notice when Pope Francis said in an interview that all he wants is to go out one day to a pizzeria "without being recognised".

On Sunday, Mr Cacialli personally handed the pope a pie as his motorcade drove through Naples, CNN reported, in what the media outlet has called "the most high-profile pizza delivery ever".

According to FB Newswire, Pope Francis, the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics, revealed in an interview with a Mexican television station in early March that he missed being able to go for pizza.

It is an excursion he hasn't been able to enjoy since taking the top job at the Vatican.

With this in mind, the staff at Don Ernesto’s pizzeria in Via Partenope, Naples, got to work on pizza fit for a pontiff when they heard the pope was going to be swinging by town.

And it wasn't just any pizza, but a thin-crust creation with "Il Papa" spelled out in dough. According to the pizzeria's Facebook page, the pizza toppings also included mozarella and ricotta cheeses, as well as yellow cherry tomatoes.

In a video which captured the sweet moment, Mr Cacialli could be seen hopping over a barrier with pie in hand as the Pope's motorcade approached.

He ran alongside the open-top vehicle with arms outstretched, yelling "Papa, papa!"

The video showed Pope Francis reaching down and receiving the gift as the crowd cheers.

An exuberant Mr Cacialli could be seen clapping alongside the vehicle, in a moment which he described as "emotional".

His own father had also once made a pizza for a world-famous leader - US president Bill Clinton.
