McDonald's to re-open in Marine Cove

The Marine Cove dining and recreational enclave in East Coast Park is on track to re-open in June after four years of re-development, with McDonald's returning to be the place's icon as it had for 30 years, reported Shin Min Daily News.

The new Marine Cove will offer more open and green spaces to visitors, who could also catch more views of the sea compared with the past, reported the Chinese evening daily.

The site will also feature a huge playground that offers equipment suitable for children of different ages, the newspaper noted.

More than 30 tenants at Marine Cove vacated the site in 2012 to make way for re-development by the National Parks Board (NParks).

Among them was the McDonald's branch which became a landmark here since its opening in 1982 - one of the earliest in the American fast-food chain to open in Singapore.

Now, after a four-year hiatus, a McDonald's outlet will re-open at the site, said Shin Min.

"Parkland Green, the other development adjacent to Marine Cove which was already opened, focuses on sports and lifestyle-oriented food," said Chia Seng Jiang, NParks' director of parks. "But Marine Cove will provide family-centred food services, such as cafeteria, fast food outlet and an Indian nasi briyani restaurant."

East Coast Park is one of the most popular parks in Singapore, attracting more than seven million visitors each year, according to NParks.

More green spaces were created in Marine Cove and Parkland Green by doing away with some facilities and downsizing others.

In the case of Parkland Green, which re-opened in September 2014, built-up space was reduced by 25 per cent.

Up to 1ha of lawn was added to the place for picnics and gatherings.
