Hong Kong might be known for having costly accommodation but don't despair! Skyscanner has found a few places where even the most spendthrift backpacker or student traveller can find a roof over her head.

Whether you're travelling on a shoestring budget, or in a pair with your most frugal friend, you'll find these places to be clean and comfy.

As a bonus, you'll probably meet other like-minded travellers for even more fun and adventure in this exciting city.

1. Hop Inn on Hankow (starts from S$27)

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sleep inside a work of art? The Hop Inn on Hankow is an award winning hostel with rooms designed and illustrated by local artists.

One example of this is Karen Pow's "Boom" room, whose calming blue walls and a light made of electronic innards, inspired by the industrial history of Hong Kong, will give you something to write home about. The value for money is unquestionable.

Outside, the Tsim Sha Tsui district is always a buzzing hive of activity, vibrant with neon lights, restaurants and even branded stores. Furthermore, it is also known to have some amazing views of the city skyline.

No worries about ambient noise though; the Hop Inn is peaceful and quiet after the sun sets. Some rooms don't actually have windows but the inventive interior should make up for that.

If you're travelling in a pair or more, consider Espace Elastique B&B which offers spacious rooms. Hong Kong isn't known to have many Bed and Breakfasts, but it does have a notable one in Lantau's Tai O village.

Some would describe it as being the perfect place to unwind and explore the "other sides" of Hong Kong. Lantau's Tai O Village is a charming ancient fishing village that comes with hiking trails and mountain biking tracks.

It is the perfect base to set up for your hiking needs. The B&B has two spacious rooms connected to a cafe on the top floor of the three-storey building.

There is even a hot tub in the roof top! The multilingual, super friendly and ever helpful Veronica who runs the places, makes good coffee, crepes, waffles among other things, so make sure you chill out at the cafe as well.

The beds are big and can fit taller persons and include a bed-side curtain, built-in universal adapter sockets and a bedside lamp for each. Yesinn services include free coffee and tea, free local calls, massage chair, iPads, internet and Wi-Fi coverage throughout the entire building.

Feel free to use their shared hair dryer, refrigerator, kitchen, rooftop garden and there is even a smoking area, if you require. Amenities like toothbrushes, toothpaste and slippers can be had cheaply, and towels can be rented so light travellers needn't worry about what they forgot to bring.

The staff has a reputation for kindness and they organise several activities such as dim sum feasts, trips to horse races, and hikes. Bonus is, they also have long-term luggage storage, handy for if you have any side trips planned while you're here.

The hostel features a large social lounge and custom built bunk pods that maximise privacy with your own light & sockets, key card security locker, and even a privacy screen. The mattresses are thick, the pillows are fluffy, and the water pressure is amazing too!
