More F&B food choices in Kallang

Aperia

8 Kallang Avenue

Drive down Lavender Street, and you will see a shiny new building, with the words Tim Ho Wan on them. No, that's not a Tim Ho Wan building, but Aperia, a mixed-use development comprising two office towers, an annex and three floors of retail stores, F&B outlets and amenities.

Located just off the corner of Kallang Road and Lavender Street, Aperia caters not only to the working folk in the region but also to residents in the Kallang and Boon Keng areas. The 24-hour Tim Ho Wan joint may be the biggest attraction in this mall, but there are other offerings too. F&B operators say they chose to open at this location because they see the potential of catering to the office crowd.

Over the next few weeks, more eateries will open, including steamboat restaurant Juang Dong Ji, Korean BBQ joint Kwon Geum Sung and Olivo, which prides itself on its low-salt savoury menu and low-sugar cakes.

Nature Cafe

#01-28

Opening hours: 10am to 9.15pm daily

Those living in the West would know of Nature Cafe, the offshoot of Nature Vegetarian Catering, which has been catering to Redhill residents for over a decade.

The vegetarian restaurant is popular with the working crowd on weekdays, and with families on weekends.

The menu here is extensive, from curry dishes that come served in a hotpot, together with brown rice, to Western picks such as pizzas, and even a black pepper "steak" burger that is made using organic pumpkin.

Nature Cafe also offers a variety of eggless desserts, such as Matchamisu, and Raw Coconut Nanaimo Cake, made of coconut, non- dairy chocolate, cashew nuts, almonds, dates and other vegan ingredients.

Banh Mi Baguette & Pho

#01-17

Opening hours: 11am to 9pm daily

Founder Lin Tong Zhe decided to start a fast food banh mi and pho joint after noticing an absence of it in Singapore. To get the recipe right, he has also hired a Vietnamese chef to show his team the ropes.

The banh mi comes in four varieties - vegetarian lemongrass tofu, spicy pork and ham, grilled saute chicken and lemongrass pork chop. The baguettes are freshly baked each day, and each banh mi is made to order, and done in front of the customer to ensure freshness.

The pho which comes in chicken and beef versions are also popular. Mr Lin says that the beef broth is cooked for 10 hours to bring out the flavour.

Mr Lin says the cafe is popular with the office crowd who want a quick but healthy bite. This is his first outlet and he hopes to open more, especially in the CBD area.

HAHA Sushi

#02-07/08

Opening hours: 11am to 10pm daily

No, this restaurant is not trying to be funny. Haha simply means "Mother" in Japanese. The restaurant serves sushi using a magnetic induction-style conveyor belt. A plate of two pieces of sushi starts from S$1.80 during lunch time.

HAHA Sushi prides itself on flying in its fish three times a week from Japan to ensure freshness.

Apart from sushi, there are the usual choices such as tempura, grilled dishes, noodles and rice bowls.

The restaurant also offers omakase sets: a five-course set is priced at S$60++.
