The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) shares Mr Eric Sin's concerns on good mobile data access in underground train tunnels, station platforms and underground walkways ("Improve underground data access"; Dec 15).
Last year, the IDA required mobile operators to comply with a more stringent set of service quality standards on mobile coverage.
All new roads and MRT tunnels were required to have more than 99 per cent mobile signal coverage, while existing MRT tunnels (such as the North-South and East-West ones) were required to have more than 95 per cent mobile signal coverage.
All mobile operators have met the standards set for MRT tunnels.
Beyond coverage, the IDA recognises that consumers also want a faster and more reliable experience when downloading data.
The IDA and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) are working closely with transport operators to facilitate mobile operators' access into MRT station platforms, tunnels and connecting underground walkways to carry out network enhancement works.
In addition, the LTA is considering installing Wi-Fi at MRT stations along the North-East Line and at major interchange stations in order to enhance wireless connectivity for commuters.
