National silat athlete Muhammad Nurshahrin, 21, dies in his sleep

SINGAPORE - National silat athlete Muhammad Nurshahrin Bin Shahruddin passed away in his sleep Saturday in his Pasir Ris home, according to the Singapore Silat Federation (PERSISI).

The 21-year-old was pursing his Higher NITEC and has represented Singapore in numerous international and regional competitions since 2007, said Channel NewsAsia.

His accomplishments included winning a gold medal at the inaugural Asian Pencak Silat Championship in 2011 and a bronze medal at the 2013 SEA Games with his partner, Sheik Ferdous bin Sheik Alau'ddin.

His body was brought to Singapore General Hospital for a post-mortem, said The Straits Times.

Nurshahrin, a former Loyang Secondary school student, was not believed to be suffering from any illness prior to his death, added the English daily.

Culture, Community and Youth Minister Lawrence Wong took to Facebook to express his condolences to his family and friends.

Mr Wong called him an accomplished silat exponent and highlighted his past achievements.

Saddened to learn that national silat athlete Muhammad Nurshahrin Bin Shahruddin passed away today.

Nurshahrin was an accomplished silat exponent; just two years ago, he partnered Sheik Ferdous to clinch a bronze at the Myanmar SEA Games. He also won a gold medal at the inaugural Asian Pencak Silat Championship held in Singapore in 2011.

My deepest condolences to his family and friends.
