New yokozuna joins rivals in ritual

ISE, Mie - They will be meeting as rivals in the ring next month. But earlier this week, the three yokozuna, including newly promoted Kakuryu, performed the dohyo-iri ring-entering ceremony together for the first time at the Ise Grand Shrine.

Yokozuna Hakuho and Harumafuji performed the ritual in the Shiranui style, while Kakuryu has adopted the Unryu style. Having just recently learned the intricate movements, he received applause from an appreciative crowd at the event, which was held as a dedication to the prestigious shrine.

The Shiranui style symbolizes offense, while the Unryu style represents a harmony between offense and defense.
