Netizens go gaga over Crimea A-G

TOKYO - As tensions rise in Crimea, some netizens seem to have eyes only for its new Attorney-General, Ms Natalia Poklonskaya.

A video of a press conference she gave, which was posted on YouTube last Thursday, has garnered more than 15,000 views, while it has drawn over 140,000 views since being re-posted to a Japanese YouTube channel, rocketnews24.com said.

A trail of comments followed, and several netizens punned on her job as a prosecutor with comments like: "Please cross-examine me harshly!"

A Facebook fan page dedicated to her was liked by more than 3,200 people yesterday. Photos from her personal Facebook page have been re-posted online.

AOL News Japan pointed out that Ms Poklonskaya, though young at 33, has had an impressive career to date, taking up cases against violent criminals and environmental problems.

Violence broke out yesterday as pro-Russian protesters stormed Ukraine's naval headquarters in Crimea and the first casualties ratcheted up the stakes in the worst East-West crisis since the Cold War.
