SDP's Chee Soon Juan says he will contest in upcoming general election

SINGAPORE - Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) secretary-general Chee Soon Juan has announced on Saturday that he will contest in the coming election.

The party also held a press conference at the party's headquarters in Ang Mo Kio.

In a video of the press conference streamed live on YouTube, Chee unveiled two other SDP candidates - Sadasivam Veriyah, an ex-teacher and unionist who contested in the 2011 election in Sembawang GRC, and Wong Souk Yee, an ex-political detainee.

Dr Chee last contested in the general election in 2001. He was declared a bankrupt and could not be fielded in the 2006 and 2011 elections, after he lost the defamation suits filed by then-Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew and then-Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong during the 2001 general election.

Dr Chee was cleared of bankruptcy in 2012, reported The Straits Times.
