Female magazine celebrates 40th anniversary with special edition in April

SINGAPORE - Female, a publication of SPH Magazines, is commemorating its 40-year-old milestone with its biggest issue ever - an upsized edition with refreshed design and sharper content. It is also throwing a birthday bash on 11 April 2014 at the W Hotel.

Instead of its regular sections, Female's April issue is a reinterpretation of the magazine with breathtaking visual spreads and in-depth features that keep its readers on the cutting-edge of the fashion and beauty scene. The April issue also presents the magazine's revamped look. It features a modern masthead, new fonts and a sharper, more fashion-forward layout. The masthead for this edition comes in three different colours.

The special issue is packaged in a limited edition box set (retailing at $18 exclusively at Kinokuniya) with specially customised gifts for readers: two Nars cosmetics pouches in red and black, and Nars beauty products worth up to $40. Regular issues (at $7 a copy) also come with a free Nars cosmetics pouch in red or black.

The challenge in making a 40-year-old magazine "relevant, resilient and resonant" - according to its creative editor Jeanette Ejlersen - is to stay relevant and to always be forward thinking. While many magazines take a retrospective approach to their anniversary editions, Female wanted to create a collector's magazine, not unlike a coffee-table book.

Jeanette said: "I didn't want to look back because the nascent Female and its present state are two completely different magazines; it's two different eras. Furthermore, we've expanded the fashion and beauty sections to include pop culture, design and art. We are, and always have been, a fashion-forward magazine."

For the special collector's edition, the team has created a unique feature: 40 Things We Love, a visually stunning and glossily curated section that celebrates all the things they covet and adore. It includes brands, ideas and products.

Diana Lee, General Manager of SPH Magazines, said: "The refreshed Female magazine boasts a highly relevant and visually impactful environment for advertisers and readers - they can look forward to a magazine that appeals to their cosmopolitan sensibilities. We also want to thank them for their support over the years."

Readers can expect a year of dedicated celebrations - an exclusive, by-invitation-only party at W Singapore's stylish Woobar to celebrate the occasion with partners; the annual Female Catwalk and a series of party collaborations with fashion labels.
