Who will be 2014's biggest billionaire gainers?

Recently Wealth-X took a look back at the biggest gainers of 2013, and now it is time for us to look forward and predict who could increase their wealth by the largest amount in the year ahead.

It is inherently difficult to predict who will make US$10 billion (S$12.6 billion) ahead of time, but last year was a fantastic year for the majority of billionaires, who increased their combined wealth to US$6.5 trillion.

Using 2013 absolute and relative performance as a guide and factoring in absolute current wealth and, most importantly, prospects for future accumulation of wealth, we have come up with a list of billionaires who will increase their wealth by the greatest amount in 2014.

Here are twelve individuals who could post the largest gains in 2014:
1. Warren Buffett
2. Bill Gates
3. Sergey Brin & Larry Page
4. Jeff Bezos
5. Sheldon Adelson
6. Jack Ma
7. Mark Zuckerbreg
8. Elon Musk
9. Evan Spiegel & Bobby Murphy
10. Tadashi Yanai

1. Warren Buffett

Last year the S&P 500 rose by over 25 per cent, repeatedly hitting record highs throughout the year. With Warren Buffett worth nearly US$60 billion (S$75.5 billion), Berkshire Hathaway, where 99 per cent of his fortune is derived from, would need to increase "only" 15 per cent to make 2014 an over-$10-billion year for Buffett (although this does not take into account any new large philanthropic donations he may make over the course of the year).

For the first time ever, Berkshire lagged the S&P 500 in the last 5 years, but given Buffett's remarkable investing track record, this is unlikely to cause investors too much concern.
