64-year-old UK tourist fell into ravine in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: A foreign tourist fell into a gorge after losing her footing during an excursion at the Penang National Park in Teluk Bahang here today.

Trinton Valeria , 64 , from United Kingdom who was trekking with her husband, Thomas David , 68 , along a trek near a jetty and fell into the 7.5 -meter- deep ravine .

The senior citizen fractured her legs and sustained head injuries.

Teluk Bahang Fire and Rescue Department operations chief Mohd Yusof Mat said a team was despatched to the scene after receiving a distress call at 12.31pm.

He said the rescue team took 20 minutes to free the victim who was trapped between the rocks in the gorge.

Mohd Yusof said several passer-bys chipped in to help the firemen in the rescue operations.

"The victim suffered internal bleeding but remained conscious ," he said.

Valeria has been warded at the Penang Hospital for medical treatment.

The couple stayed at a hotel in the inner city.
