MAS changes flight numbers for KL-Beijing-KL flights

SEPANG, Malaysia - In light of the disappearance of MH370, Malaysia Airlines has changed the flight number for its Kuala Lumpur- Beijing-Kuala Lumpur flights effective tomorrow.

MAS in its statement said the previous flight number of MH370 for flights from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing will be revised to MH318.

Its MH371 return flight, would be changed to MH319 and its frequency remains unchanged.

"As a mark of respect to the passengers and crew of MH370, which disappeared on 8 March 2014, the MH370 and MH371 flight codes will be retired from the Malaysia Airlines' Kuala Lumpur- Beijing-Kuala Lumpur route.

"Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families of our colleagues and passengers of MH370." it said.

Checks on the Malaysia Airlines ticketing website showed that MH318's maiden flight would be tomorrow (March 14) departing at 12.35pm.

Malaysia Airlines ticketing officers contacted confirmed the flight number change on the website.

MH319 departs 8.55am tomorrow.

This is the second time it has changed the flight number.

It was observed that earlier the airline had changed the flight number a few days after the aircraft was reported missing, changing it to MH360/MH361 (to and fro).

The flight number was believed to have changed to reflect the Chinese homonyms, with number 8 which sounds like "prosper" or "wealth" and the number 9, which means 'long lasting'.

In the past, Air France changed its Rio de Janeiro - Paris flight number from A447 to A445, possibly to avoid negative perception, after its plane crashed in the Atlantic Ocean in 2009.
