SINGAPORE - Malaysia will be the focus of the sporting world when it stages the 2014 Laureus World Sports Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, March 26.
The Laureus World Sports Awards is the premier honours on the international sporting calendar and the only annual global award programme to give recognition to the best sportsmen and women for their achievements across all sport disciplines.
Nominees for the Laureus World Sportsman, Sportswoman, Team Breakthrough, Comeback and Action Sportsperson of the Year Awards are decided by the Laureus Media Selection Panel. This exclusive panel is comprised of the world's leading sports editors, writers, broadcasters and online journalists.
Another specialist panel determines the nominees for the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award, which is overseen by the Executive Committee of the International Paralympic Committee.
The Laureus World Sports Academy, made up of 46 of the greatest sportsmen and sportswomen of all time, then vote by secret ballot to select the Award winners in all seven categories. This year, award recipients will unveiled at a globally televised Awards Ceremony staged at Istana Budaya in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Great Olympians such as Sebastian Coe, Michael Johnson and Mark Spitz, football giants Bobby Charlton, Marcel Desailly and Ruud Gullit and sports legends, including boxing's Marvelous Marvin Hagler, rugby's Sean Fitzpatrick and skateboard legend Tony Hawk, will be attending the prestigious event. Also present will be one of Malaysia's greatest sports stars, seven-times world squash champion Nicol David.
Double Olympic gold medallist and Laureus Chairman, Edwin Moses, said "I am delighted that the 2014 Laureus Awards is to be staged in Kuala Lumpur and am thrilled that so many members of the Laureus will be there to salute the greatest sportsmen and sportswomen of the year,"
