Young Lions clinch 2-0 win over Brunei

Captain Hariss Harun's first-half effort and striker Sahil Suhaimi's third goal in three games were enough for the Young Lions to clinch a 2-0 victory over Brunei at the Zayar Thiri Stadium on Friday (Dec 13), bringing them a step closer to SEA Games glory.

Dominant Midfield

With playmaker Shahfiq Ghani suspended after picking up two yellow cards in his first two matches, Coach Aide Iskandar opted to field Izzdin Shafiq, with Hariss supporting Sahil.

Hariss, in particular, impressed, capping a fine first-time display with a well-deserved goal in the 35th minute.

Lone striker Sahil also proved himself as one of the tournament's in-form forwards, beating the Brunei goalkeeper with a deft shot after receiving a defence-splitting pass from defender Safuwan Baharudin.

Comfortable Win

But despite easing to a comfortable win, some doubts still remain of the team's ability to finish off their chances - a problem Aide conceded after the game.

"I told the boys it doesn't matter what's the score, so long as we bag the three points (that come with a win)," he said.

"But I agree that scoring goals and creating chances are things we can do better."

Singapore vs Malaysia

The Young Lions' final game in Group A on Sunday (Dec 15) will be a tantalising match against fierce Causeway rivals Malaysia.

A win will guarantee them top spot although a draw might still be good enough, depending on other results.

Said Aide, "Malaysia will definitely be the favourites as they are the defending champions.

"We are the underdogs.

"But I believe both sides will go for a win and it will be a good game."
