One out of five pairs of Tangerang mayor hopefuls failed to verify their documents, an official from the Tangerang municipal Elections Commission (KPU) said on Monday.
"The pair of Achmad Marju Kodri and Gatot Suprijanto failed to acquire enough support from political parties,a main requirement to run in the election," chairman Syaril Elain told The Jakarta Post.
Meanwhile, those who passed the document verification process would proceed to undergo medical check-ups at Tangerang General Hospital starting on Monday.
They are: Tubagus Dedy "Miing" Gumelar-Suratno Abubakar, backed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and the Nation Mandate Party (PAN); incumbent secretary Harry Mulya Zein and Iskandar Zulkarnain, who obtained support from the United Development Party (PPP), the People's Conscience Party (Hanura) and the National Ulama Awakening Party (PKNU); Abdul Syukur-Hilmi Fuad from the coalition of the Golkar Party and the Prosperous Justice Party; and incumbent deputy mayor Arief R. Wismansyah and running mate Sachrudin, backed by the Democratic Party, the Nation Awakening Party (PKB) and the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra).
Kodri, the director of Tangerang water supplier PDAM Tirta Benteng, said that the pair initially got support from Hanura, which later threw weight behind the pair of Harry-Iskandar.
"Hanura's local party board faxed a letter to the poll commission stating that I had completed the candidacy documents and that the commission should find them acceptable. The commission summoned me for clarification over the fax on Sunday, just hours before they made the decision to fail us," Kodri explained.
"I will sue the commission through the State Administrative Court and file a report with the Election Organizer Ethics Council," he said.
