S'porean man killed in car accident in Ipoh

SINGAPORE - A Singaporean businessman on holiday in Ipoh was killed in a road accident on his way back to his hotel.

The car he was in collided with another vehicle in the early hours of Sunday.

Mr Lau Kum Who, 41, was in the passenger's seat of a Proton Iswara driven by a Malaysian when an oncoming car hit its side.

Malaysian traffic police said the driver of the Proton Iswara, who is in intensive care now, had made a turn against the traffic.

They said the road was still wet from a downpour.

The driver, Mr Lau's friend, will be charged with causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Collision

The collision occurred around 12.30am and rescuers arrived on the scene within 15 minutes. By then, the men had already been pulled out from the car by passersby.

Mr Lau was dead when the ambulance arrived. The driver was taken to hospital with a broken ribcage.

Mr Lau's brother told The New Paper that the Malaysian police had phoned their mother, who lives in Singapore with Mr Lau, about the accident on Sunday.

The brother, who works in Kuala Lumpur, said the family went to Ipoh the same day to arrange for the body to be brought back for the wake in Singapore.
