SINGAPORE - Android tablet users who wish to read The Straits Times during long morning commutes can now do so, with the launch of its new Android tablet app on Thursday.
It is the latest addition to the daily newspaper's stable of apps on the iPhone, Android phone and the iPad.
"With this new Android app for tablets, our readers can now enjoy ST reports whenever they want on more platforms," said Mr Warren Fernandez, editor of The Straits Times.
"It adds to our efforts to bring the news to you wherever you are."
The app, which is free to download, comes with free breaking news and push notifications.
Subscribers can also access a seven-day archive and the paper's full print content.
It is part of The Straits Times' ST Tablet package, which replaces the ST iPad package. The subscription to the new package costs $26.65, the same as that for the previous iPad package. It allows access to both iPad and Android tablet apps.
Current subscribers to the iPad package or the All-in-One package, which provides The Straits Times' content on multiple platforms, will automatically enjoy access to the new app. The All-in-One package costs $28.65 a month.
Civil servant Jeff Hong, 51, who uses a ViewSonic tablet, is open to trying out the new app. "If it's free and if my data is protected, why not?" he said.
Those who sign up for a Straits Times subscription are also in for a treat.
They, as well as current subscribers who switch from news vendors to subscribe directly with Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), can also snag attractive gifts.
Those who decide on a three-year plan can choose between the soon-to-be-launched Samsung Galaxy Tab3 and a Samsonite trolley bag.
Two-year-plan subscribers can choose either a TomTom global positioning system or a Nestle coffee maker.
Those subscribing for a year get a Philips garment steamer or a Novita air steriliser.
Existing SPH subscribers are also eligible for the one- or two-year plan when they upgrade or renew their subscription to The Straits Times All-in-One package.
The packages are available at www.sphsubscription.com.sg.
