KOTA KINABALU, MALAYSIA - A woman who left her 6-year-old daughter in her car while she shopped for groceries panicked when she returned to the vehicle to find it locked and her child asleep.
The incident happened in front of a supermarket in Taman Putra Jaya in Telipok here at 8pm.
The woman, in her 20s, panicked when she could not unlock the car door. Bystanders shook the car to wake the child up.
The drama ended half an hour later when the girl woke up and unlocked the door.
"I did not bring my daughter with me because she was not feeling well. I left her in the car just for awhile with the engine still running," said the woman, adding that she had learned her lesson and would not do it again.
The incident happened a day after a 3-year-old child died of heat stroke after she was left in her mother's car for more than six hours in a school compound in Subang Jaya on Thursday.
In Subang Jaya, Nawal Iris's family are still trying to come to terms with the tragedy that has befallen them.
When met at their house in USJ 6 here yesterday, Nawal Iris's father, who wished to be known only as Samsudin, said the family was still in shock over the incident but accepted it as God's will.
"My wife is also traumatised and she cannot talk about it. I believe that this has all been written by God as our fate, and we redha (accept) His will."
Samsudin said his family had performed tahlil prayers after Nawal Iris' burial on Friday.
Subang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Yahaya Ramli said police have yet to record the statement of the victim's mother, Norzatusy Hazwa Abdul Rahim, 32.
"We will give her some time as she is still traumatised."
