2 men arrested for stealing from vehicles

SINGAPORE - Police have arrested two men suspected of stealing from vehicles in two separate cases.

In the first case, a 55-year-old man was arrested for his connection to two cases of theft from a vehicle in the vicinity of Jurong West Street 65.

On June 26 at about 6.40pm, a 33-year-old male victim reported to the Police that his two cash-cards - with a total stored value of about $60 - had been stolen from his vehicle.

Through extensive follow-up investigation and review of CCTV's footage, police officers managed to establish the identity of the suspect.

They arrested him in the vicinity of Tech Park Crescent this afternoon. Five cash-cards were found in his possession and seized as case exhibits.

In the second case, a 17-year-old teen was arrested for his suspected involvement in several cases of missing cash-cards and coins from taxis. These cases were reported in Woodlands housing estate from May to July 2013.

Following extensive enquiries and investigation, police officers managed to ascertain the identity of the suspect and arrested him in the vicinity of Woodlands Street 32 today.

Both suspects will be charged in Court on July 20 for the offence of Theft. If convicted, they face a maximum jail term of three years and/or a fine.

The police would like to remind members of public to safeguard their vehicle against theft by adopting the following crime prevention measures:

• Park in well-lit areas;
• Install an anti-theft system;
• Remove cash-cards and other valuables for example laptops before leaving your vehicle, even if it is for a short while;
• Ensure that your vehicle has been secured properly. Wind up all windows and lock all doors of your vehicle; and
• Keep a lookout for suspicious characters in the vicinity before leaving. If you spot anyone tampering with other vehicles, take note of their appearance, attire, height, or any other distinctive physical features and call '999' for assistance.
