Expect a lot from Philanthropist

PHILANTHROPIST (Centre): All his three wins were over the sprint distance of 1,200m. /div>

SINGAPORE - A record of three wins, one second and in excess of $120,000 in the kitty isn't something to be sniffed at - especially when it only took him just six starts to get there.

Anyway, PHILANTHROPIST isn't done yet. There's plenty of racing ahead of him and, come Sunday, he just might chalk in another win to expanding resume.

The three-year-old reminded us of his talent when he did a sparkling gallop on the training track yesterday. Sent over the 600m, he clocked 39.7sec - finishing with something in reserve.

Trained by ZL Mok for Good Health Stable, Philanthropist failed to make it a fourbagger when he could only manage a sixthplaced finish in his last start.

Then again, you could say, it was expected.

After all, it was the Singapore Guineas and the third leg of the Singapore Three-Year-Old Challenge run over the mile and Philanthropist looked like he was at the deep end of the pool.

All his three wins were over the sprint distance of 1,200m and while his breeding - he is by Churchill Downs - does suggest he will eventually see out the 1,600m, the Guineas came too early too soon.

He gets back to the 1,200m on Sunday (Race 10) and he'll have his winning jockey Oscar Chavez in the saddle.

He will get no favours from Gate 10 in the 12-horse field but, on yesterday workout, he does look to be the form horse in the race.

BIG SEQUALO would have gone into many notebooks yesterday after he too turned in a fluent piece of work. With Danny Beasley in the saddle, he ran the 600m in 38.1 after going one round at a steady canter.

The three-year-old Australian-bred put the writing on the wall when he made the board in two of his three Kranji starts.

He was second on debut - beaten by just two parts of a length.

Then, in that same month of October, he ran last in a Class 4 race over the 1,100m. There were genuine reasons for that abysmal showing. A vet check revealed that he returned lame in the offfore.

Big Sequalo was spelled thereafter and only returned to racing at the tailend of last month when he ran a gallant third to Greenback in an Initiation over the 1,200m.

That run, coupled with his work on the training track should have topped him up sufficiently for Sunday's assignment.

We suggest you have something riding on him in that 1,200m sprint.
