He arranges drug shipment from jail

INDONESIA - While he was serving time for drug trafficking, he organised a shipment of about four tonnes of Ecstasy from China.

Freddy Budiman arranged the delivery from his Cipinang Penitentiary prison cell in Indonesia in May last year.

The drugs, which were sent from Shenzhen, were concealed in a shipping container registered as carrying fish tanks. The shipment was cleared at North Jakarta's Tanjung Priok port, the Jakarta Post reported.

But Indonesia's National Narcotics Agency raided the truck in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, shortly after it left the port, discovering the shipment.

Budiman was charged with trafficking under Indonesia's anti-narcotics laws and sentenced to death.

He used connections at the jail to make the order and sneak the container past Tanjung Priok security, Chief Judge Aswandi said.

"The defendant paid 90 million rupiah (S$11,000) for the container service," Judge Aswandi said, according to Indonesian news portal Tempo.co
