SINGAPORE - Singapore will push for accurate land concession maps at an ASEAN meeting in Kuala Lumpur next week, said Environment and Water Resources Minister Vivian Balakrishnan in Parliament on Monday.
Using such maps, along with satellite technology, can help identify firms who have contributed to the haze, he added.
The minister also said he would seek several other "key outcomes" from the three-day ASEAN Sub-Regional Ministerial Steering Committee (MSC) on Transboundary Haze Pollution. It was initiated in 2006 and comprises Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
Singapore, Dr Balakrishnan said, will seek to have MSC countries agreeing to a date for the public launch of an ASEAN Sub-Regional Haze Monitoring System that can identify errant companies. Among other things, Singapore will also push for the involvement of high-level officials from the countries' relevant ministries and agencies in the MSC process.
Meanwhile, Dr Balakrishnan said Singapore is also looking to enhance its haze early warning system. Sophisticated computer models are being developed, he said, and such technology will allow for greater spectrum sensitivity of the haze and allow for better prediction of weather patterns.
