Value in retaining ITE's current name

We thank Mr Aloysius Foo for his feedback and support of the ITE education system ("Time for name change"; last Thursday).

The Institute of Technical Education (ITE) was restructured as a post-secondary institution in 1992, to provide career and technical education in various fields.

The term "technical education" is used broadly to describe the development of a body of "knowledge and skills" for various careers and para-professional occupations.

To reflect the level and status of ITE education, ITE's campuses were consolidated and rebuilt into three mega colleges over a period of 10 years - ITE College Central, ITE College East and ITE College West.

Since its predecessor's days, ITE has undergone significant transformation. It is now a brand name that is well-recognised locally and internationally.

There is therefore value in retaining its current name so as not to diminish the brand equity that we have built up over the years.

We appreciate that Mr Foo has taken an interest in the branding and naming of ITE, and we look forward to his continual support of ITE education.

Tham Mei Leng (Ms) Divisional Director, Corporate Affairs & Development Institute of Technical Education
