Say cheese...

SINGAPORE - Say cheese... Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong takes a polaroid picture of a family during Singapore HeritageFest's 10th anniversary celebrations at National Museum on July 21. Mr Lee launched a $5 million grant to encourage Singaporeans to be active in creating their cultural heritage, reported The Straits Times Online.

Those with good ideas on how to capture and celebrate Singapore's shared heritage can apply for grants ranging from $1,000 to $30,000. An open call for proposals will be made from Aug 1.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Lee said heritage "anchors our sense of place and identity", "enables a nation to adapt to change and progress" and is "the yin to the yang of material progress".

With 10 hubs around the island, the festival whose theme is "Memories For Tomorrow" aims to "bring out the 'people stories' behind the diverse aspects of our heritage", said festival director Angelita Teo.

The festival is the National Heritage Board's signature community outreach programme. It will run until July 28.
