Portman to direct her first novel-adaptation feature film

Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman, 32, is set to direct her first feature film based on A Tale of Love and Darkness, a memoir by Israeli novelist Amos Oz, who announced it on Wednesday.

"She (Portman) read A Tale Of Love And Darkness and asked me for the rights to make a film adaptation around five or six years ago. I agreed because of my high esteem for her work. She's an excellent actor," Oz, 74, told Reuters.

The Israeli-American actress will write the screenplay and star as a young Oz's mother. She reportedly will be in Israel in October to cast.

The memoir recounts Oz's years in war-torn Jerusalem in the 1940s and 1950s, his mother's suicide and Israel's shifting politics.
