SINGAPORE - A total of 10,282 students will graduate from the National University of Singapore this year. This year's graduating class comprises 6,547 students receiving bachelor degrees and another 3,735 students receiving graduate degrees.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) today began the celebration of the accomplishments of 10,282 graduates from the Class of 2013.

This year's graduating class comprises 6,547 students who will receive bachelor degrees while another 3,735 students will receive graduate degrees. A total of 23 ceremonies will be held at the NUS University Cultural Centre over nine days, from 8 to 16 July 2013.

His Excellency Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam, President of the Republic of Singapore and NUS Chancellor, presided over the NUS Main Commencement Ceremony held today. Mr Heng Swee Keat, Minister for Education, was among the distinguished guests present at the ceremony.

Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, NUS President, said, "Today, we celebrate with pride the outstanding achievements of the Class of 2013. Our graduates have truly embodied the NUS' culture of excellence, with many of them making their mark in academic pursuits, sports, community service and the arts. I am confident that NUS' transformative education will serve as a strong foundation for these graduates as they continue to pursue their aspirations, and at the same time, make significant contributions to society and the world beyond."

Pioneer graduates from 5 degree programmes

This year's commencement ceremonies will present the pioneer batch of graduates for 5 degree programmes:

· NUS-Imperial College Joint Doctor of Philosophy Programme

· NUS-CEMS Double Degree Programme

· Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences: Master of Social Work

· Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health: Doctor of Philosophy

· Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health: Master of Science

The Faculty of Engineering will also see the graduation of its inaugural cohort of 44 Design-Centric Programme (DCP) students. A unique learning pathway, the DCP nurtures innovative engineer-leaders with a global perspective, and who have the ability to identify and solve complex problems of societal importance. The centrepiece of the DCP is the multi-semester team-based research project that covers three broad themes, namely, Smart and Sustainable Cities, Engineering in Medicine and Future Transportation Systems.

NUS Commencement 2013 will culminate in a Commencement Dinner on Thursday, 18 July 2013 at the University Cultural Centre. The dinner, to be graced by His Excellency President Tony Tan Keng Yam, will be attended by graduates, faculty, staff and alumni of the University.
