Offer study of various religions as option

Secular education in our primary and secondary mission schools is missing the valuable imparting of lifelong fundamental moral values to students, at the expense of a heavily structured academic curriculum.

In his letter, Mr Benjamin Wee aptly pointed out that “religious knowledge plays an important part in moulding character” (“Religious knowledge lessons important in mission schools”; last Friday).

The mission school that I attended left a permanent influence on my life, especially in the area of social responsibility.

If it had not been for caring teachers and dedicated nuns who conducted regular Catechism classes, many of us would have been misguided by a lack of moral compass and direction in life.

Bible knowledge and other religious studies of different faiths used to be offered as subjects in Singapore schools and at the O levels.

Mission schools in Singapore could consider reintroducing religious studies of different faiths as optional subjects, in order to strike a better balance in the school curriculum.
