Olympics: Almaty, Beijing, Oslo shortlisted for 2022 Games

LAUSANNE - Beijing, Oslo and Almaty will contest the race to win the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Monday.

The three cities were the only remaining candidates after the withdrawal of Krakow, Poland; Stockholm and Lviv, Ukraine from the race.

The IOC's president, Thomas Bach, announced the decision at the Olympic body's headquarters in the Swiss city of Lausanne.

"These three candidates have totally different approaches in terms of heritage, budget, infrastructure, but all impressed us," said Bach.

The winner will be announced on July 31, 2015 at an IOC congress in Kuala Lumpur.

The 2018 Winter Olympics will take place in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
