NEON PIGEON
Look for the fluorescent pink pigeon outside this izakaya, which seats 70 and accommodates 20 at its standing bar and outdoor drink rails.
For starters, or Bird Feed as they are called here, have Tsukune Sliders ($10), a Japanese meatball patty and bun coupled with pickled Japanese cucumber and tare aioli, a garlicky mayonnaise; or the Hokkaido Buttered Corn broth ($9) with oxtail, miso and chilli.
Then have its signature dishes, which include the Steamed Snapper ($14) and Grilled Duck Breast ($18, below left). There is also the Miso Roasted Pumpkin Rice ($15) with sugar snap peas, crispy garlic and egg yolk.
Groups of four to six can share the Barbecued Pork Shoulder ($220), which is slow-cooked for 20 hours in a black pepper teriyaki glaze and served with a ginger scallion dipping sauce, kimchi and onigiri. A two-day advance order is required.
Pair your meal with the Neon Pigeon Junmai Daiginjo ($28, 180ml), a drier style of sake that enhances the flavour of food, or with speciality cocktails such as Harajuku Girl ($16), a mix of gin, shiso leaf and plum bitters.
