Palette Restaurant & Bar

The BreadTalk Group has opened an upmarket version of a food court, with this multi-concept Asian eatery at Capitol Piazza.

The 420-seat Palette houses 10 restaurants and street food sellers under one roof, serving cuisines that range from Chinese to Indian to Indonesian. Eateries include household names such as Balestier Bak Kut Teh and Ah Yat Seafood Restaurant.

Newcomers include Ah Koong Restaurant, a 28-year-old noodle business from Johor Baru, which serves fishball noodles ($6.90) and yong tau foo (a mixed set with noodles costs $12.90).

Making its debut here is Hok Kee, a Hong Kong wonton and beef noodle house. Its wonton noodles cost $8 and beef brisket noodles are priced at $9.

Some stalls such as Huat Huat BBQ and Yong Xin Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle are familiar sights in the Food Republic food courts, which are also operated by the BreadTalk Group.

Other eateries in this 12,000 sq ft space include Indian restaurant Delhi 6 and Indonesian restaurant Indo Chili.

Unlike in food courts, diners make their orders via iPads and waiters serve the food to their tables. Taking a leaf from buffet lines with live food stations, the eateries in Palette have open-concept kitchens, offering diners a good view of the kitchen theatrics.

Palette also comes with a bar for diners to pair their food with tipples. 90 Gastro Bar serves cocktails that are inspired by Capitol Theatre, which was recently refurbished. One of them is 1686 ($17), which is made with raspberry-infused gin, elderflower liqueur and lavender and lychee syrups. It gets its name from the number of seats in the old theatre.

The bar also serves desserts such as Golden Chilled Mango Soup with Sago and Citrus Fruits ($8), which is a concoction of mango ice cream, mango puree and coconut milk.

Where: B1-20/27 Capitol Piazza, 13 Stamford Road
Open: 10.30am to 10.30pm daily

Richmond Station

This cafe is named after a metro station in London, which was next to the cafe where owner Phyllis Lau, 27, worked as a barista for 2 1/2 years. Full Mighty Borough ($19.90) is a hearty platter of scrambled eggs, chicken sausages, turkey bacon and sauteed mushroom, served with crumpets and muffins made in-house and maple syrup. Crab Benedict ($16.90) has poached egg and crab meat seasoned with thyme and oregano, and topped with Hollandaise sauce.

There are also scones which are served with Devonshire cream and mixed berries jam ($5.60 for four). Wash them down with teas (from $5) such as Earl Grey & Cream, and Malibu Dream (coconut & pineapple-flavoured tea) or coffee blended from Brazilian and Ethopian beans (from $3.80 for a single shot of espresso).

Carne & Caipirinha

The name of this 74-seat restaurant combines the words for "meat" in Portuguese and Brazil's national cocktail, which is made with sugar cane liquor. It is no surprise that the menu comprises more than 10 chicken, beef, lamb and pork cuts, which are roasted over charcoal fire.

Passadors (meat waiters) dressed in tradition gaucho outfits go around carving meats onto diners' plates. Round off the meal with a buffet of gourmet salads, pastas, rice and traditional Brazilian Feijoada (black bean stew).

Buffet prices start at $49.90. There are drinks such as the zesty Caipirinha ($12 a glass) and Skol ($12 a bottle), which is a popular beer in Brazil.

Where: 01-50, Block 106 Sunset Way, Clementi Street 12
Open: 6 to 11pm, Monday to Saturday, 5 to 11pm, Sunday
