Open for business: Set, Shi Li Fang Hotpot, Restaurant Ember, The Milky Way Homemade Ice Cream and Coffee


Affordable contemporary cuisine is the focus at Set, a new 94-seat prix-fixe restaurant at PoMo.

The highlights among executive chef Erick Chun's original creations are mushroom veloute with peanut butter; miso soup with sake; and pork baby back rib steamed, roasted and slathered with Chinese barbecue sauce. Desserts include poached pear with gelato, lime panna cotta and bread pudding. Diners can complement their meals with a selection of New and Old World wines.

A five-course lunch costs $28.80++ a person, while a six-course dinner costs $38.80++ a person. Wines start from $8++ a glass and $40++ a bottle.

Singapore's love affair with hotpots continues with another new hot spot - Shi Li Fang Hotpot at Orchard Central. The chain from China has more than 20 outlets in Beijing and has just opened its first in Singapore.

Expect six soup bases (from $3.60) such as spicy mala, tonic chicken soup and fish broth. Ingredients include meat, seafood, and vegetables. There are also more than 30 choices of dipping sauces, including Shi Li Fang's signature sesame sauce.

A la carte items range from $2.90 to $14 a serving, while set meals start at $5.80 for a vegetable set.

Modern European restaurant Ember at boutique hotel 1929 in Keong Saik Road relaunches tomorrow with a new chef and a new menu. Heading the kitchen now is chef Sufian Zain, who has worked at top restaurants here including Iggy's and Waku Ghin.

The menu features dishes such as carpaccio of Tasmanian Petuna ocean trout with orange, pickled French shallots and endives; bouillabaisse with New Zealand langoustine, Hokkaido scallops and barramundi; and 60-hours slow-cooked Angus short rib with charred onion puree, confit of cherry tomatoes and beef jus.

The ice cream and coffee cafe in Tanglin Halt is run by Mr Renfred Ng, alumnus of reality singing competition Campus Superstar. The housemade ice cream comes in flavours such as Sicilian Pistachio, Salted Caramel and Strawberry Cheesecake and is priced from $3.80 for a single scoop. Waffles are priced at $5 a serving (add $3 for a scoop of ice cream or $4 for berry compote). Prices start at $3 for an espresso and $3.50 for a cup of tea from 1872 Clipper Tea.
