Pedestrian safety comes first

I agree with Mr Francis Yeow Ghim Chye ("Keep electric transport devices off footpaths"; last Tuesday).

Other writers who gave reasons justifying the use of electric-powered transport devices on pavements missed the most important point - pedestrian safety.

Footpaths are meant for pedestrians. That is why there are clearly defined paths for pedestrians and cyclists at East Coast Park.

There have been cases of cyclists hitting pedestrians on footpaths, causing serious injuries.

The issue of liability comes into question. Who will bear the cost of treatment for injured pedestrians? Can cyclists take up third-party insurance that will pay for this, and can it be made mandatory?

People who support having bicycles on footpaths should bear in mind that small children and seniors also use these paths.
