Penang is top culinary spot

Renowned travel guide publisher Lonely Planet has listed Penang as the top culinary spot for this year, British daily The Independent reported.

It beat other top culinary spots like Victoria in Australia, north-west Spain, Lake District in the UK and Puglia in Italy to bag the No 1 spot.

Lonely Planet's commissioning editor Robin Barton said Penang is known for its hawker fare and the "must tries" are char kway teow, Hokkien mee and asam laksa.

He encouraged foodies to check out the Esplanade Food Centre, where hawker food combines favourably with the seafront location, and some night markets in Penang.
