Pikachu used its "thunderbolt power" to turn on the lights on a Christmas tree featuring characters from the popular video game "Pokemon" in a business district of Tokyo on Thursday.
The six-meter-high tree went on display in front of the Yomiuri Shimbun building in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, to promote a new series in the newspaper that features Pokemon characters.
The new series will start on Dec. 19 and feature Pokemon characters introducing interesting dialects from across Japan.
The tree is adorned with about 300 stuffed characters and will be on display through Dec. 27.
An exhibition that looks back at a previous "Pokemon" serial will also be held on the building's third floor until Dec. 27. Admission is free.
Thursday's ceremony was attended by children from The Yomiuri Shimbun's in-house day care facility and elementary school students who visited the building on a field trip.
They cheered with joy when Pikachu turned on the tree's lights.Speech
