KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA -  Renowned veteran actor, director and writer Senator Tan Sri Mohamed Jin Shamsudin has been named as this year's recipient of the prestigious Anugerah Seniman Negara (National Artiste Award).

My passion has always been to create movies to enrich our heritage. This award has come as a big surprise, says Senator Tan Sri Mohamed Jin Shamsudin

He will receive RM60,000 cash, a trophy, a songket Baju Melayu, entitlement to first class medical treatment at any government hospital and will be certified as an expert in the filming field.

The win was made sweeter for the 73-year-old as he is the first recipient for the newly-introduced award for filming.

"We want to show our appreciation to the people who have contributed to the country with their distinctive talent and attitude," Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal said when announcing winners of this year's Anugerah Seni Negara (National Arts Awards) yesterday.

He said recipients would be presented with their awards by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at a ceremony to be held later.
The prestigious award, introduced in 1993, recognises outstanding contribution to the development of visual arts in four categories: music, dance, acting and sculpting.

Winners of this biannual award are selected for their standing in the arts and culture scene and for their contributions and works that have benefited society.

Previous recipients are wayang kulit puppeteer Hamzah Awang Samat (1993), artist Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal (1995), master sculptor Wan Su Othman (1997), makyong legend Khadijah Awang (1999).

Playwright Datuk Syed Alwi Syed Hassan won in 2002, theatre activist Rahman Abu Bakar (2004) and renowned composer and saxophonist Datuk Ahmad Nawab (2006).

Other winners in other categories this year include popular actors Farid Kamil and Rosyam Nor, theatre activist Fauziah Nawi and film director Suhaimi Baba.

Berita Harian was also honoured with the Anugerah Pendukung Seni for being the best media.

Other winners will receive RM5,000 cash, a certificate and a trophy.
