Racing: Sweet Lodge impresses in hit-out

With just six unplaced outings over 19 starts, SWEET LODGE didn't fluff her lines when she turned in a pleasing workout on the training track on Tuesday.

Ridden by reigning champion apprentice jockey "Harry" Kasim, Sweet Lodge was never off her bit when covering the 600m in 36.3sec.

That piece of work should hold the four-year-old by Danzero in good stead when she takes on a Class 3 field over the 1,600m on Friday night.

CONSISTENT

Prepared for the races by Steven Burridge, Sweet Lodge has, off late, been a model of consistency. Indeed, her last six starts have produced two wins, a second, a third and two fourths.

In her last start, which was in a strong Benchmark 83 race over the 1,800m on the alternate surface, she failed by a length to catch Polytrack "specialist" Goliath by a length.

That was on Jan 26. Eleven days earlier, in a Class 4 event, Sweet Lodge didn't do a thing wrong when beating 11 rivals over the shorter 1,400m trip.

Indeed, she had just three behind her when they turned but, when her jockey Manoel Nunes stepped on the gas 150m from home, she took off to win going away from her rivals.

Sweet Lodge, who races in the colours of Lucky Stable, will be right at home over the mile as she won over that trip last October.

That day, with Joao Moreira on the reins, she charged home to beat Dragon by a narrow margin.

That races was a Class 4 event. For just the second time in her career, she steps up to Class 3 on Friday night but, with a comfy 52.5kg on her back and over the long course on the turf, watch out for her flying home over the final 100m.

She's that kind of girl.
