DL Shoot-out: Best value

The stealth fighter was said to be the inspiration for Asus' recent gaming laptops. The end result is an angular design with a matte, rubber-like finish and rear exhaust vents.

This chassis is reused in the G750JX, which is a refresh of the older G75VW model with a new Intel Haswell CPU and Nvidia GeForce GTX 770M graphics.

The backlit keyboard is spacious, comfortable and has good key travel. While the chassis is made of plastic, the palm rest has a smooth, brushed metallic finish. Like the Aftershock Titan, the G750JX also has a Thunderbolt port.

The screen on the Asus has a 1,920 x 1,080-pixel resolution, but its quality is similar to the Toshiba Qosmio X70.

Viewing angles for this non-IPS (in-plane switching) display are decent from the sides, but they are not as good on the vertical axis.

At $2,198, the Asus G750JX is a bargain but the version sold locally comes with a slow 5,400rpm hard drive. Applications will take much longer to start up compared with the solid-state drives (SSD) or hybrid drives on other gaming laptops. Fortunately, it does not affect gaming performance, though it may take longer to load or save games.

Asus also makes it a hassle for those who want to upgrade to an SSD or larger drive. First, you have to purchase the drive from a retail store. You then approach Asus' service centre to have it installed. Attempting to install it yourself will void the warranty.

It is a move that may turn off the enthusiast crowd, though the attractive price may also draw in first-time gaming laptop buyers. Even after adding the roughly $250 extra for a 256GB SSD, the G750JX is still relatively affordable compared with its competitors.

Despite a slow hard drive, the Asus G750JX provides excellent graphics performance for its price.
