We thank the letter writer for his feedback ("Save small trees on road shoulders", by Mr John Lee Huan Chiang; March 6).
During a prolonged dry spell, we are mindful of the need to strike a balance between conserving water and watering plants to maintain our greenery.
We have stopped routine watering of roadside plants for several years now as we have refined our planting strategy to include species more tolerant of extreme weather conditions.
Our ongoing site inspections show that most of our trees are still holding up quite well. The small trees unable to weather the dry spell will be replaced by hardier species gradually. We will water plants that are less resistant and require frequent watering for sustenance, for example, young saplings.
