Rugby: Big boost for SCC Rugby 7s

The Singapore Cricket Club's (SCC) rugby section is celebrating several milestones this week, thanks to their new sponsorship deal with Societe Generale.

The European financial services group will become the title sponsor of the three-day SCC Rugby 7s tournament starting today for two years.

It is the first time in the history of the tournament that a title sponsor has been acquired.

The tournament's organising chairman Marc Lansonneur said: "It is a pleasure to welcome Societe Generale as title sponsor, as we celebrate our 67th edition of this historical tournament this year.

"We are proud to have such a respected partner in the world of rugby, as Societe Generale, support our club's rugby activities.

"It is an important milestone for all of us at the Singapore Cricket Club and the wider community of Singapore rugby at both senior and junior levels."

This year's tournament will feature 21 teams such as 2011 and 2012 champions Daveta, as well as Penguins, which lost 43-5 to the Asia Pacific Dragons in the final last year.

There will also be some local flavour in the tournament with the inclusion of teams such as the Singapore Select side, the Singapore Barbarians and the SCC 7s side.

In addition to their support of the tournament, which will be played at the Padang, the Societe Generale will also sponsor the club's rugby section, as well as its junior rugby academy.

It is also the first time in the club's history that all three tiers of its rugby section has acquired a title sponsor.

A worldwide partner for the Rugby World Cup next year, the French banking institution has been a long-time supporter of the sport, and also recently announced a sponsorship deal with the Hong Kong Valley Rugby Football Club.
