Rumors: iPad to get split-screen multitasking, new iPhone to have 1704x960 display

With Apple's WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) just weeks away, the rumours are coming in thick and fast. The latest rumours now suggest that split-screen multitasking could finally be coming to the iPad with iOS 8.

Split-screen multitasking has been something of a sore spot for Apple as its competitors (Samsung and Microsoft in particular) have continuously pointed out that despite everything that is good about the iPad, it cannot do split-screen multitasking. That could change with iOS 8, which makes sense since the iPad Air has plenty of screen real estate. Making this work on the smaller iPad Mini with Retina Display, however, would be a little more tricky.

The other rumour that is currently floating about is that the new upcoming iPhone could have a display resolution of 1704 x 960 pixels. This is just short of Full-HD - 1920 x 1080 pixels, but still substantially more than the iPhone 5's 1136 x 640 pixels resolution.

Assuming that the new iPhone will come with 4.7 and 5.5-inch displays, this would give the models a pixel density of around 416 and 355 pixels per inch respectively, which is well beyond 300 pixels per inch, which the late Steve Jobs once said is the limit at which the naked human eye can perceive individual pixels.

To drive the new high resolution displays comfortably, the new iPhone would most probably also be powered by the rumored new A8 chip and a more beefy GPU. Additionally, we could also see memory being doubled from 1GB to 2GB.
