School basketball: Dunman Secondary dominates

SINGAPORE - For the past three years, the East Zone 'B' Division boys' basketball title has been owned by Dunman Secondary School.

Dunman's vice-like grip on the trophy continued in 2015 when they made easy work of Chung Cheng High (Main) at yesterday's East Zone final held at Anglican High, cruising to a 74-40 win to make it four successive zonal titles, ensuring Dunman (left) will go into the Nationals in the best shape possible.

Speaking to The New Paper after their win, Dunman captain Joshua Alas said: "To be honest, we haven't faced much competition in this zone, not only this year but also over the last few years.

"Of course, it is very important to win the East Zone title again, because it's a great confidence boost just before the Nationals.

"I'm very happy with how we played as a team, and we're aiming to go all the way and win the national championship."

While the first quarter ended all square at 12-12, Dunman started to fire on all cylinders from then on and entered the half-time break 33-16 up.

There was no stopping the Dunman boys, who are out to set the record straight.

A national triumph will exorcise last year's demons, as Dunman lost to Unity Secondary in the final, surrendering a seven-point lead with a minute to go, ultimately losing 67-65.

Traditionally regarded as the weakest zone in the national schools' basketball circuit, Dunman were the last team from the east to claim a national title in 2012.

The 'B' Division boys' nationals will begin later this month and Dunman's team are gunning to get back on top.
