School sports: Season ends with 0 losses

Since the Schools National C Division girls' floorball competition started in 2007, Tanjong Katong Secondary have won it twice, with the second triumph coming yesterday on the back of an unbeaten season.

They achieved the feat after cruising to a 6-2 victory over St Margaret's Secondary in the final at Yishun Sports Hall, having beaten the same opponents 8-4 in the group stages of the competition.

They finished the campaign with 11 wins out of 11 games, yet the team said that there is no secret to their success apart from old-fashioned hard work, as they added to their previous title won in 2013.

Captain Chan Shi Hui, 14, said: "We did extra training this year, even when our teachers did not plan them. And it pays to have a determined team with the same goal that have bonded well."

Forward Glenna Tan opened the scoring for Tanjong Katong, before Shi Hui added a second to finish the first period 2-0.

The second period saw a similar run of play with forwards Sharifah Nadhrah and Mavis Ng scoring for Tanjong Katong to bring the score to 4-0.

There was no let-up from Tanjong Katong in the third period, as both Shi Hui and Mavis scored their second goals of the match. Forwards Nur Syakirah Rukaimi and Natalie Low netted the consolation goals for St Margaret's in the third period.

Tanjong Katong coach Ngasti Wanto Zakaria, 50, said: "Our early lead gave the girls a lot of confidence and the girls took control of the game from then on.

"Our school has built a new hall, and it will be a good present for the girls after winning the title."

The C Division boys' final saw Victoria School clinch the title after a convincing 9-1 win over Bedok South Secondary School. It is the fifth title for the school, with their last triumph coming in 2012.

In a dominant display, Victoria raced to a 4-0 lead in the first period through goals from twin brothers Irfan and Ihsan Noor Isham (two), as well as Ammar Khairudin.

Bedok South tried to stifle Victoria's forwards in the second period by pressing high up the court, limiting Victoria to just a goal from Faez Nabil.

But Victoria came storming back in the final period with Ammar Khairudin scoring his second goal of the match. Darius Phua added a brace and Mikail Sumono Ramli scored Victoria's ninth goal.

Bedok South scored a consolation through skipper Amos Pang.

Captain Ihsan, 14, said: "We trained twice as hard as last year, and managed to beat the school that we lost to last year (Coral Secondary). It feels good to bring glory to the school."
