SEA Games highlights: June 13

SINGAPORE - It was another day of joy and disappointment for the athletes as the eighth day of the South-east Asian Games (SEA Games) came to a close on June 13.

Singapore upped its medals tally to 233 (74 gold, 65 silver and 94 bronze) and is in the lead for the most number of medals.

Thailand still has the most number of golds and increased their lead to 78 today.

Here are some of the highlights from the SEA Games on Saturday, June 13:

SAILING

Jodie Lai, 14, has clinched the gold medal for Singapore in the female under-16 optimist class. Thailand's Kamonchanok Klahan took silver and Malaysia's Mohd Nazri Nor Nabila Natasha won the bronze.

For the men's individual under-16 competition, Malaysia's Muhammad Fauzi Kaman Shah bagged the gold, while Thailand's Suthon Yampinid took silver and Singapore's Daniel Ian Toh took bronze.

12-year-old Muhammad Fauzi Kaman Shah became the youngest Malaysian double gold medalist at the Games.

The Langkawi resident took home a gold medal last week with the Optimist team and bagged another gold today at the individual Optimist event at the National Sailing Centre.

Optimist is a single-handed sailing dinghy used by children up to the 15 years old.

In the men's double-handed 470 dinghy, Singapore duo Darren Wong Loong Choy and Jeremiah Yeo beat three other teams to come out tops. Philippine sailors Emerson Villena and Lester Troy Tayong took home the silver, and Thai duo Thanaphong Kamonvat and Navee Thamsoontorn won the bronze.

WATER-SKIING

In the women's slalom skiing finals, Singapore's Sasha Christian took the gold and Kalya Marisa Kee won bronze. Indonesia's Ummu Thoyibhatus Sholikah won silver.

This is Sasha Christian's second gold medal at this SEA Games. On Friday, the 22-year-old scooped up the gold medal in the women's individual wakeboard competition at Bedok Reservoir.

Over in the men's competition, Singaporean Mark Leong won the gold while Indonesia's Indra Hardinata and Malaysia's Alexander Yoong came in second and third respectively.

VOLLEYBALL

The Singapore women's team has made it into the semi-finals and will face Vietnam on June 14.

Defending champions Thailand will face Indonesia in the other semi-finals match on that day as well.

BADMINTON

Shuttlers Loh Kean Yew, Derek Wong and Liang Xiao Yu will be advancing to the quarter-finals in their respective singles category after their wins today at the indoor stadium.

In the men's doubles competition, Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Chayut Triyachart overcame duo Ariloud Keophithoun and P Fongmalayseng from Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR).

The pair will play against Thailand's Pakkawat Vilailak and Wannawat Ampunsuwan on June 14.

Singapore's mixed doubles pair Tan Wei Han and Terry Hee also advanced into the quarter-finals and will face off against Thailand's Sudket Prapakamol and Sapsiree Taerattanachai on the same day as well.

Taekwondo

The Republic's taekwondo athletes bagged three bronze medals today.

Singapore's Jason Tan took home a joint bronze with Thailand's Klompong Nutthawee. He competed in the men's Under-58kg semi-finals which took place at Singapore Expo Hall 2.

Nur Fadzlyn Mohd Zahurddin secured Singapore's second bronze in the women's U-49kg category and the last bronze medal was secured by Vincent Lim in the men's U-63kg category.
