BigBang from another angle

BigBang from another angle

SINGAPORE - Fans got to see a different side of BigBang on Saturday night.

Three members of the top K-pop boy band, G-Dragon, Seungri and Taeyang, ended up twerking, dressing up their fans and blazing through 14 chart-topping hits on stage during their first fan meet here at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The other two members of the group, T.O.P and Daesung, were not present due to conflicting schedules.

The Thinking Of You fan meet, which started at 6.30pm, attracted over 4,500 fans who were on their feet right from the start of the two-hour event, screaming their lungs out for their idols.

We take a look at the night's highlights:

Twerk it

Miley Cyrus would be so proud. The BigBang guys can twerk as well as, if not better than, her.

When asked by the event's emcee to show off their twerking skills spontaneously, leader GDragon, 25, pointed to fellow member Seungri, 24, and said: "I can't do it, but I know he can."

The hyperactive Seungri proceeded to raise temperatures as he thrusted his hip and shook his buttocks in tandem with the snappy beat of their song Fantastic Baby.

Taeyang, 25, joined in with his version of the twist-and-jerk dance.

G-Dragon, seemingly shy and reluctant at first, caved and twerked for a few seconds, to cheers from fans.

Student Chen Meijing, 18, said: "Seungri is so funny and entertaining. I can't believe he twerked so well. I really enjoyed this part as it is something I would not get to see during their normal concerts."

Playing dress-up

Those who have always wanted to learn a fashion tip or two from style icon G-Dragon saw him in action during the fan interaction segment.

In this segment, G-Dragon and his bandmates dressed three lucky fans in different themes - "hip-hop", "cute" or "sexy".

For the "cute" theme, G-Dragon dressed a girl in an outfit that resembled boy wizard Harry Potter.

Taeyang, who picked the "hip-hop" theme, did an excellent job of making his shy and nervous fan look like a star.

Cheeky Seungri teased his fan: "Before I dress you up, tell me who is your favourite member in the group? This question is very important to me!"

Of course, the giggly fan muttered "You!" into the microphone.

Having chosen the "sexy" theme, Seungri continued to make everyone laugh as he gave her a whip and told her to crack it on stage.

Student Tan Shiyin, 18, said: "The members were really sweet to those fans and they stood very close to them.

"Even though I wasn't chosen to go up, I felt so happy for those who were. I felt quite jealous, though!"

Flying solo

G-Dragon, Seungri and Taeyang belted out three to five songs each during their solo segments.

Taeyang serenaded with signature ballads such as I Need A Girl, but it was clear from the fans' screams that they were there for his recent hit Ringa Linga, which topped charts when it was released in November.

Seungri charmed the crowd with, "I really love you all, and it's so good to be back!" as he turned up the heat with fast tracks including Gotta Talk To You and What Can I Do.

But it was G-Dragon who brought the house down. The suave frontman showed why he reigns in K-pop with his stage presence, rapping skills and sleek dance moves as he blazed through songs like Michigo, One Of A Kind, Crooked and Crayon.

Undergraduate Janice Low, 21, who paid $228 for her ticket, said: "It's really worth the money because I got to hear all their recent hits. G-Dragon really has so much swag. He is very cool."

She added: "It was great hearing Ringa Linga live as my favourite member is Taeyang. I haven't heard him sing that song on stage before."

Power of Three

Although not all the band members were present, G-Dragon, Taeyang and Seungri sang a few of the group's chart-topping hits, to the delight of the fans.

G-Dragon even prompted the audience to sing along loudly to T.O.P and Daesung's parts.

And fans obliged by filling in their parts during popular track Bad Boy from their phenomenal 2012 album Alive.

The trio closed the fan meet on a high with their best-selling song Fantastic Baby.

The track was so well-received that it was one of YouTube's most viewed K-pop music videos in 2012 and has since got over 99 million hits.

Marketing executive Germaine Teo said: "I enjoyed the part where all of them performed on stage together because I could really feel the energy from the members as well as all the fans.

"We were screaming so loudly that we are very hoarse now."

The 26-year-old added: "I miss them already. I hope the group comes back for a full concert soon."
