Siti's star style

Siti's star style

Siti Khalijah, or Siti K, is having a mighty good year.

The 28-year-old actress had just made her debut on popular Channel 5 skit show The Noose and created an online stir as the feisty "makcik" character in an April Fools' Day viral video used to promote the series premiere.

She is also filming her first movie, Our Sister Mambo, with Michelle Chong and Moses Lim. Later this month, she will be performing stand-up comedy on stage with heavyweights such as Mark Lee, Adrian Pang, Kumar and Pam Oei in Happy Ever Laughter.

All that while juggling the many theatre roles that fall at her feet.

It's the big league for her.

But when it comes to fashion, she is just a girl at heart.

"I like vintage dresses and flower accessories. I don't wear white or sleeveless and I don't dress sexy," she said, explaining that vintage dresses excite her.

"They are one-off. A lot of my dresses are from the 50s and 60s, so they are not new. But I don't mind it."

Siti does most of her shopping online.

"It's easier to find my sizes and there are a lot of interesting finds. The prices are between US$30 (S$38) and US$60."

And when it comes to accessories, Siti likes them floral.

"I have many types of flower accessories of different sizes. I buy them from anywhere that's affordable," she said.

"I like big flowers in my hair or pinned onto my dress. I find joy in accessorising.

"I buy shoes from UK's Irregular Choice. They have the cutest shoes!

"Only a few places in Singapore sell them and a pair of shoes can cost about $200."

NOT SENTIMENTAL

But she is clearly not sentimental about her purchases.

Siti's first buy with her own money was a $50 silver necklace when she was 18.

"I used to work part-time at Alkaff Mansion as a waitress," she said.

"I felt like an adult and it was so precious. My mother said this shows how hard I worked and I should treasure it."

When asked where this necklace is today, Siti was sheepish.

"I don't even know where it is now."

But what she does know is that whatever she wears, she wears it for herself.

"I do not care that I'm a big girl. I dress for myself. My only care is that it makes me feel good."

SEXY SITI

Siti's conservative upbringing means sexy is not an option but a state of mind.

"When I'm acting, I don't mind because I'm playing a character. But if it's too revealing, I'll try to work it out with the director."

This polka dot dress was a gift from a friend.

"It's short but I can wear it with tights. And these New Look heels were bought during a sale."

SULTRY SITI

When she needs to glam it up, Siti goes traditional.

"I collect vintage kebayas and saw so many in Solo, Indonesia."

But this gold number is special as she designed it and wore it to her sister's wedding two years ago.

"This was made at a bridal shop. Back then, the peplum was very popular, so we added it. It still works today."

Siti even found matching four-inch gold wedges.

"These are cab shoes. You can wear them only when you don't have to do a lot of walking."

SPECIAL SITI

When asked to come in an outfit that means something to her, Siti chose this dress she bought in Kuala Lumpur.

"It is difficult to find maxi dresses with sleeves. And I thought I couldn't pull off the prints, but it works for me.

"This, for me, is the perfect outfit!"

SIMPLY SITI

This is the style that is simply Siti.

She bought this dress six years ago from a thrift shop in Australia for A$10 (S$12).

"I prefer dresses that go below my knees, those with sleeves.

"I like hair accessories because I love the pin-up girl look."

When asked how many headbands she owns, she could only reply: "Many!"
