Star Awards opens doors for first fan meet

It was a unique opportunity for fans to mingle with local stars.

Miss Calista Yong was one of the 510 fans and sponsors invited to nightclub Butter Factory for the Star Awards 20 Top 40 party, a two-hour fan meet with MediaCorp celebrities, including Desmond Tan and Julie Tan.

The stars picked out their hotline numbers on stage for the Top 40 Most Popular Artistes category for the annual awards next month.

A few lucky fans also went on stage to play some simple games with them.

In previous years, this event was usually held behind closed doors in a hotel ballroom, for the media.

Miss Yong, 24, a teacher, had the chance to take photos with her favourite actors, such as Romeo Tan, Zheng Geping and Zhu Houren, on Friday night.

She said: "In the past, we wouldn't have had the chance to do this. The stars that I took photos with were all very nice and friendly."

Local actor Elvin Ng, whose fans came ready with big posters bearing his name, said: "This is a novelty, and I think it's fun. I am very grateful to my fans who have been giving me their unwavering support."

The 33-year-old heart-throb, who is confident he will be voted into the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes this year, added: "I've received this award seven times. So I think I should be able to get in based on past records.

"I have confidence in my fans as they are always there for me and are my pillar of strength."

Ng is also nominated in a Star Awards online category, Favourite Male Character, for his role as Ah Wei in I'm In Charge.

Fan interaction

Rising actor Romeo Tan also enjoyed interacting with his fans.

The 28-year-old, who is nominated in online categories Favourite Male Character and Favourite Onscreen Couple, said: "The fans knew our hotline number on the spot, and we could rally them to vote for us.

"There's a very lively atmosphere. I think my fanbase is growing and I'll make use of social media to help garner some votes for myself over the next few weeks."

Rebecca Lim, 26, who is nominated in the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories, said: "Tonight feels different compared to previous years. It's nice to get in touch with the fans. It's a new experience."

One of them, student Clement Ow, 25, agreed: "It's my first time taking a photo with her. So I felt very excited and happy. This is definitely an eye-opener."
