SINGAPORE - Singapore's Griselda Khng and Sara Tan claimed an impressive silver medal at the 49er FX Youth World Championships in Gdynia in Poland on Sunday.
With 23 points across nine races, the duo, who were making their debut in the women's event, finished 17 clear of third-placed Spaniards Maria Cantero Izquierdo and Ana Hernandez Moreno. Gold went to Finland's Norra Ruskola and Camilla Cedercreutz, who had 15 points in the 12-team competition.
The winner is the team with the fewest points. The 49er FX is a double-handed skiff introduced for the Rio 2016 Olympics.
Singapore Sailing Federation vice-president Rupert Ong said: "It is good to see our sailors progressing along the Olympic pathway. It takes time and effort to do well in the Olympic classes and their performance bodes well for their Olympic ambitions."
Despite being new to this class - Khng, 21, and Tan, 22, have been training together for only three months - they showed few nerves. They nailed several starts and scored three wins to cement second spot on the leaderboard early in the five-day series.
Khng is an ex-Optimist world champion and 420 Women's World Championship bronze medallist. Tan is a 2011 SEA Games winner in the women's 470.
Compatriot Elizabeth Yin, meanwhile, came in third in a field of 54 in the North American Laser Radial Championships in Kingston, Canada.
