Singapore bowlers win Para bronze

Bronze was the colour for a second straight day for Team Singapore athletes at the Asian Para Games in Incheon.

Bowlers Kalvin Tay and Anuar Saaid claimed the medal in the men's doubles TPB8+TPB8 yesterday, combining for a score of 1,582 pinfalls.

South Korea's Kwon Min Kyu and Park Sang-Soo clinched gold (1,896), while Malaysians Ishak Mohd Khairul and Amil Husin Ahmad settled for silver (1,662).

The Singapore duo had also won bronze in the same event at the Asia Para Tenpin Bowling Federation Championship in Bangkok in May. Anuar, 53, said: "I'm very surprised and very happy because I didn't think I would be returning home with a medal.

"I SMSed my wife once we got the bronze - she said she's cooking asam pedas (sour and spicy fish) for me when I return to Singapore."

Tay, 41, added: "It's a team effort. We encouraged and tried to relax each other to calm our nerves.

"When one missed the pins, the other would say 'don't worry, I'll pick you up'."

Swimmer Theresa Goh bagged Singapore's first medal - also a bronze - in the women's 100m breaststroke SB4 final on Sunday.

In men's seven-a-side football yesterday, the Republic lost 0-4 to Iran in their opening group match.

The country has sent its biggest-ever contingent to the Games, with 53 athletes competing in 11 sports (athletics, badminton, boccia, seven-a-side football, hand-cycling, lawn bowls, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis and tenpin bowling).
